Vilnius Street in Kaunas is a place that every guest of the city visits. We, the KRS team, had the great honor to contribute to such a significant project in the city.
Prior to the project, rainwater and domestic wastewater flowed through a single collector on Vilniaus Street, eventually flowing into the Nemunas River. This posed a risk to the river's ecosystem and environment.
The reconstruction and construction of the new engineering networks, which started in June 2021, was the perfect opportunity to solve this problem, combining attention to the past with innovative solutions, with the overall aim of renewing the city while preserving its historical heritage.
The project, which included the reconstruction of 854 m of water pipes, the installation of 306 m of new domestic sewage networks and the renewal of 1,748 m of surface water networks, was a challenge not only in a technical sense, but also in a cultural one. The works were carried out in a cultural heritage area and required close cooperation with archaeologists to ensure the preservation of cultural assets through excavations and to prevent any potential negative impact on historical finds.
The main objective of the project was achieved - the separation of the mixed sewage systems in Vilniaus Street. Rainwater and domestic wastewater are now routed through separate pipes. Domestic wastewater is discharged to a sewage treatment plant, which has significantly reduced the pollution of the river Nemunas.
The project increased the availability and efficiency of Kaunas city's water supply and wastewater networks, improving the quality of heat supply to the population and contributing to environmental protection.
